If you are visiting Lake Kournas it is worth driving 15 minutes further along the narrow uphill road to Kournas. The church is locked and you will not be able to see inside unless you find someone in the neighbourhood to give you the key, but it’s worth a try. In wintertime it is very quiet (usual shopping can be done), but Chania and Rethimnon are the places who are still alive. It is situated at an altitude of 210 meters and the few inhabitants are engaged in farming producing oil and wine. Vafes of Apokoronos is the only village in the prefecture of Chania which has been declared since 1997 entirely by the Ministry of Culture as a historical monument because of its significant magnificent architecture and history. Strolling in the the streets of the small village of painting, you realize the beauty of Venetian buildings. In Vafes, there is a tavern to eat and a hostel to stay, which is divided into two buildings which were restored following the architectural heritage of the place. In Vafes, there is the church of the Holy Apostles with the golden temple and arches, the very old stone vaulted storerooms. In two of these, the village’s priest has gathered a small collection of icons of the 18th century. Take the highway. Pass all the exits to Rethymno and continue, headed in the direction Chania. Drive for approximately 24,5 and take the exit to Vryses. Enter Vryses village and at the end of the road turn right. After the Oil station at your left, a little bit further you will see an INKA Super Market at your right. There at the junction turn left and follow the road to Vafes Village. Enter the village and at the crossroad at the heart of the village turn left. It is located on Cape Drapanos in the Vamos municipality of the Apokoronas region, Chania, Crete. In this officially protected, traditional village a lot of interesting buildings can be found, such as the 18th century two-roomed, arched olive oil press, the temples of Panagia and Agios Sergios, the old school and many residences. Many of the well-known Gavaliana wells still stand within a fantastic landscape. In addition there is an excellent folklore museum at Gavalochori Village; here you can see the history and the culture of the village. It is hosted in a renovated Venetian building with stone arches. The museum was founded in 1967 but was inaugurated in September 1993. It is housed in a building typical of the local traditional house architecture and occupies two levels. The first room represents the most typical traditional house of Crete, which is known as kamarospito. This type of rural house was initially single-spaced and had an arched opening which more or less divided it. In the second hall one can see exhibits made of silk, such as women’s clothing and weavings for household use. The pottery section (jugs, oil lamps, etc) and the historical collection of arms, paintings etc, are in the third hall. Passing on to the fourth room one can see bobbin lace and parts of a wood carved ecclesiastical iconostasis. In the last room there are elaborate stone artefacts. Finally, there is an agriculture and tourist women''s co-operation on the main square, which has a cottage industry producing knitting embroideries and laces of delicate art. You can easily walk around to tavernas, cafes, bars, shops and the center of the village. A car would be recommended if you are planning to do sightseeing around the cities. We are usually present at the listing during the guests' stay in a rather discreet manner in order to provide help and support when needed. Kournas village where the villa is located is a quite place for relaxation. The beneficial geographical position of "Kournas village" allows visitors to easily access the most delightful sandy beaches and sites, as it is 20kilometres from Rethymnon on the National road of Chania-Rethymon, 3 km from "Georgioupolis beach" and only 2 km from "Kavros beach". In addition, guests have the chance to visit the famous Kournas Lake which is the only natural lake among Mediterranean islands. Furthermore, the villa is located just a short distance from traditional tavernas and supermarkets. Location & Directions There are two ways to reach the island of Crete: BY BOAT: From Piraeus port, daily departures to Souda port of Chania or to the port of Heraklion. BY PLANE: There are two international airports on the island: in Chania and in Heraklio. DISTANCES Chania Airport: 52 km ( 50 min. drive to Kournas village). Souda Port of Chania: 26 km (30min. drive to Kournas village). Heraklion Port or Airport: 103 km (70 min. drive to Kournas village). From Chania airport or Souda port: Follow the signs to the highway in the direction of Rethymnon. Take the highway. Upon reaching Georgioupoli exit, decrease your speed. After 5 km you will reach the tourist village of Kavros. At the second exit turn right at the BP oil station following the signs to Kournas village 500m aprx. Before Kournas village there is a V crossroad, follow the right road. After 300m you will reach Mare Blue Villas complex at your left. From airport or harbour of Heraklion: Follow the signs to the highway in the direction of Rethymnon – Chania. Take the highway. Pass all the exits to Rethymnon and continue, headed in the direction Chania. After the exit to Episkopi, decrease your speed. 4 km later, on your right-hand side, you will see a sign marking the end of Rethymnon prefecture. 2 km later you will reach the tourist village of Kavros. Keep your eyes on your left-hand side. At the first exit turn left at the BP oil station following the signs to Kournas village, 500m aprx. Before Kournas village there is a V crossroad, follow the right road. After 300m you will reach Mare Blue Villas complex at your left. The beneficial position of the villas keeps the houses beautifully cool. All bed linen, bath, hand and tea-towels are provided. The Electric, water costs and swimming pool maintenance are also included in the prices. Cleaning services are provided with the frequency depending on the duration of accommodation. Guests should make a rather proper use of the swimming pool. Running and diving is forbidden at the pool and children must be supervised all the time. Guests who need a baby cot and Internet access should inform us in advance. If you are visiting Lake Kournas it is worth driving 15 minutes further along the narrow uphill road to Kournas. While the lake is 'touristy', Kournas village is completely unaffected by tourism and takes visitors on a journey back in time, as do many villages in the interior of Crete (these words were written in 2009, I hope I won’t need to change them in future…) agapinakis taverna in kournasThe old houses, the village square, the pottery workshop opposite the large kafeneio and Agapinakis's taverna "Kali Kardia", with its wonderful salads and delicious meat. You can easily walk around the village where you can find tavernas, cafes etc. However a car would be recommended in order to reach the famous long sandy beach or big supermarkets.
