It is generally unknown beach, just because it ... did not exist before 2010, as it is artificial! It is also not seen from the old road that links Agios Nikolaos with Eastern Crete. The beach is artificial and is formed in a narrow bay, which is very well protected from the winds. Only easterly winds could affect the area, but they are very rare in Crete. The beach has fine whitish sand, making the colors of the sea stunning. It is very well organized, because it is operated by the luxurious local hotel Daios Cove. To get to the beach, if you don't stay in the hotel, you should walk down a concrete pathway with staircases. In order to find the path, turn left just before the hotel entrance and follow the road to the houses outside the resort, till you find a narrow street leading to the staircases. If you are visiting Lake Kournas it is worth driving 15 minutes further along the narrow uphill road to Kournas. While the lake is 'touristy', Kournas village is completely unaffected by tourism and takes visitors on a journey back in time, as do many villages in the interior of Crete (these words were written in 2009, I hope I won’t need to change them in future…) agapinakis taverna in kournasThe old houses, the village square, the pottery workshop opposite the large kafeneio and Agapinakis's taverna "Kali Kardia", with its wonderful salads and delicious meat. Opposite the Venetian port of Heraklion and next to the Arsenali Nuovi stands out an imposing stone building. During the Venetian occupation, this building housed the salt warehouse, La Bottega Del Sal, where the Venetian conquerors kept the product that was valuable to them and their economy. In this unique location overlooking the Venetian castle "Koule" in the old port of Heraklion, is our house, which we called " La casa Del Sal ". This historical house was an observatory (Belvedere) and is present on medieval maps of Khandaka (the old name of Heraklion). Guests should make a rather proper use of the swimming pool. Running and diving is forbidden at the pool and children must be supervised all the time. Besides, Apokoronas is one of the green areas of West Crete and you will be astonished by the diversity of the beauty of the place.
